TOOTH RESTORING

If a tooth is affected by caries, must be completely removed. Then the "defect" is filled again to protect the tooth. There are the methods for this, depending on the size of the decay:

A final fluoridation hardens the enamel against attacks of daily life.

The detailed oral hygiene consultation, which is very important to us, will help you discover the many little things that you can still improve in your daily oral care at home.

Direct composite fillings

For smaller defects, we usually recommend a tooth-coloured plastic filling. For this purpose, a mouldable material (composite) is inserted into the tooth, which is modelled by us and hardened by means of a UV lamp. We use only the most modern materials to achieve the best possible aesthetics and long-term results. By using several different colours and a special layering technique, we can imitate the natural tooth in shape and aesthetics.

Inlay fillings
(inlays, partial crowns)

An inlay is considered the method of choice when the defects are somewhat larger or have to withstand greater chewing force. Because then a plastic filling can no longer achieve the required stability. The hardening of the plastic causes it to shrink by a few percent, which is negligible in the case of a small filling, but would transfer tensile forces to the tooth in the case of a larger one. The consequences would be the formation of gaps at the transition between the tooth and the plastic. In the long run, this leads to caries and possibly a perceived "pulling" due to the induced tension on the tooth.

The tooth is prepared as gently as possible and the caries is removed. Then an impression of the tooth is taken and sent to our dental laboratory in Munich. The technician creates the perfectly fitting inlay using a plaster model. Until the inlay is finished, we replace it with a temporary restoration so that the tooth and the aesthetics do not have to suffer. Finally, they receive their "masterpiece" at our practice and it is placed in the tooth so that it regains its natural shape and function. Depending on the indication, one chooses between the materials gold and ceramic.

We will of course be happy to advise you on the advantages and disadvantages of the various materials in order to find the most suitable solution for you.

Crowns

A crown is needed if the tooth is weakened by a massive cavity, a very large old filling a root-canal-treatment , or a fracture.

A crown may also be needed for aesthetic reasons (i.e. extensive discolouration, or chipping). Some people grind their teeth so badly that, after CMD treatment, they need the addition of crowns to help rebuild the needed shape of their teeth. To perform this procedure, the tooth must be prepared.

After preparation of the tooth, impressions are taken and sent to our lab-technician. The technician will receive all detailed and relevant information regarding tooth colour, shape and special functional requirements, building a functional and beautiful crown for you, which we will attach to your tooth.
